رحلت حضرت محمد (ص)
در سال يازدهم هجرت رسول اكرم (ص) در آخرين سفرحج (در عرفه)، در مكه و در غديرخم، در مدينه قبل از بيمارى و بعد از آن در جمع ياران و يا در ضمن ‏سخنرانى عمومى، با صراحت و بدون هيچ ابهام، از رحلت ‏خود خبر داد. چنان كه قرآن رهروان رسول خدا (ص) را آگاه ساخته بود كه ‏پيامبر هم در نياز به خوراك و پوشاك و ازدواج و وقوع بيمارى و پيرى مانند ديگر افراد بشر است و همانند آنان خواهد مرد.

پيامبر اكرم (ص) يك ماه قبل از رحلت فرمود:
" فراق نزديك شده و بازگشت ‏به سوى خداوند است. نزديك است فراخوانده شوم و دعوت حق را اجابت نمايم و من دو چيز گران در ميان شما مى ‏گذارم و مى ‏روم: كتاب خدا و عترتم، و خداوند لطيف و آگاه به من خبر داد كه اين دو هرگز از يكديگر جدا نشوند تا كنار حوض كوثر برمن ‏وارد شوند. پس خوب بينديشيد چگونه با آن دو رفتار خواهيد نمود."

در حجه ‏الوداع در هنگام رمى‏ جمرات فرمود: "مناسك خود را از من ‏فرا گيريد، شايد بعد از امسال ديگر به حج نيايم و هرگز مرا ديگر در اين جايگاه نخواهيد ديد."

روزى به آن حضرت خبر دادند كه مردم از وقوع مرگ شما اندوهگين ‏و نگرانند. پيامبر در حالى كه به فضل بن عباس و على بن ‏ابي‌‏طالب (ع) تكيه داده بود به سوى مسجد رهسپار گرديد و پس ازدرود و سپاس پروردگار، فرمود: "به من خبر داده‏ اند شما از مرگ ‏پيامبر خود در هراس هستيد. آيا پيش از من، پيامبرى بوده است كه‏ جاودان باشد؟! آگاه باشيد، من به رحمت پروردگار خود خواهم ‏پيوست و شما نيز به رحمت پروردگار خود ملحق خواهيد شد."
روزي ديگر پيامبر (ص) با کمک علي (ع) و جمعي از ياران خود به قبرستان بقيع رفت و براي مردگان طلب آمرزش کرد.

سپس رو به علي (ع) کرد و فرمود: " کليد گنجهاي ابدي دنيا و زندگي ابدي در آن، در اختيار من گذارده شده و بين زندگي در دنيا و لقاي خداوند مخير شده ام، ولي من ملاقات با پروردگار و بهشت الهي را ترجيح داده ام."
در چند روز آخر از زندگى رسول اكرم (ص) آن بزرگوار در مسجد پس از انجام نماز صبح فرمود:
"اى مردم! آتش فتنه‏ ها شعله ‏ور گرديده و فتنه‏ ها همچون پاره‏هاى امواج تاريك شب روى آورده است. من در روز رستاخيز پيشاپيش شما هستم و شما در حوض کوثر بر من در مي آئيد.

آگاه باشيد که من درباره ثقلين از شما مي پرسم، پس بنگريد چگونه پس از من درباره آن دو رفتار مي کنيد، زيرا که خداي لطيف و خبير مرا آگاه ساخته که آن دو از هم جدا نمي شوند تا مرا ديدار کنند. آگاه باشيد که من آن دو را در ميان شما به جاي نهادم ( کتاب خدا و اهل بيتم ). بر ايشان پيشي نگيريد که از هم پاشيده و پراکنده خواهيد شد و درباره آنان کوتاهي نکنيد که به هلاکت مي رسيد." آنگاه پيامبر (ص) با زحمت به سوي خانه اش به راه افتاد. مردم با چشماني اشک آلود آخرين فرستاده الهي را بدرقه مي کردند.

در آخرين روزها پيامبر به علي (ع) وصيت نمود که او را غسل و کفن کند و بر او نماز بگزارد. علي (ع) که جانش با جان پيامبر آميخته بود، پاسخ داد: " اي رسول خدا ، مي ترسم طاقت اين کار را نداشته باشم. " پيامبر (ص) علي (ع) را به خود نزديک کرد . آنگاه انگشترش را به او داد تا در دستش کند. سپس شمشير، زره و ساير وسايل جنگي خود را خواست و همه آنها را به علي سپرد.

فرداي آن روز بيماري پيامبر (ص) شدت يافت اما او در همين حال نيز اطرافيان خود را درباره حقوق مردم و توجه به مردم سفارش مي کرد. سپس به حاضران فرمود: " برادر و دوستم را بخواهيد به اينجا بيايد." ام سلمه، همسر پيامبر گفت: " علي را بگوييد بيايد.

زيرا منظور پيامبر جز او کس ديگري نيست." هنگامي که علي (ع) آمد ، پيامبر به او اشاره کرد که نزديک شود. آنگاه علي (ع) را در آغوش گرفت و مدتي طولاني با او راز گفت تا آنکه از حال رفت و بيهوش شد. با مشاهده اين وضع، نواده هاي پيامبر (ص) حسن و حسين (ع) به شدت گريستند و خود را روي بدن رسول خدا افکندند. علي (ع) خواست آن دو را از پيامبر (ص) جدا کند. پيامبر (ص) به هوش آمد و فرمود:
"علي جان آن دو را واگذار تا ببويم و آنها نيز مرا ببويند، آن دو از من بهره گيرند و من از آنها بهره گيرم."
سرانجام پيامبر (ص) هنگامي که سرش بر دامان علي (ع) بود، جان به جان آفرين تسليم کرد.
